Art can be beautiful and it can also be functional. I lean more towards the latter with my creativity and skills. When I started taking classes at the College of DuPage, I started out in horticulture, then photography, but neither was satisfying. When I took a papermaking class everything changed. The next natural step was book binding. I enjoy sewing blank books so that others can use the books as they see fit.
Sometimes I think the paper speaks for itself and doesn't need enhancing. Other times, the paper is just crying out for adornment. While I'm creating them, my mind is focused on what I'm doing and therefore, the everyday stresses dissipate and I become very philosophical about life. When I'm working on a book, everything is good.
